Sashiko & visible mending
Slow stitches. Cloth that lasts.
Sashiko is a Japanese tradition of simple running stitches worked in geometric patterns. Born from the need to strengthen and repair fabric, it is now loved for its calm rhythm and for repairs that are meant to be seen. You only need a needle, thread and a little patience to begin.

Getting started
How to begin in three steps
1. Choose a project
A starter kit brings the basics together. If you already have fabric to repair, a mending kit or thread and needles may be all you need.
2. Learn the running stitch
Read our free introduction to sashiko. It covers loading the needle, keeping an even rhythm and following a pattern.
3. Stitch at your own pace
Sashiko rewards patience over speed. A few rows at a time is enough — the pattern grows as you go.
Practical guidance
Beginner tips worth knowing
- Keep it relaxed. Leave a little slack in the thread after each pass so the fabric lies flat instead of puckering.
- Aim for consistency, not perfection. Even-looking stitches matter more than any exact length.
- Start with straight lines or a simple grid. Curves and complex motifs are easier once the rhythm feels natural.
- Practise on scrap fabric first, especially before stitching through a garment you care about.
- Work in good light and take breaks — it is meant to be calming.
